We will study the shifting style of painting by Giotto who bridged the gap between the symbol based Middle Ages to the classical revival of The Renaissance. Giotto was the first in a movement of painters who turned flat iconic images into three dimensional forms by using values from light to dark. Students will do two self portraits- the first in the iconographic style of the Middle Ages and the second using the perceptive use of light to create volume in the style early Renaissance.
